Building Your Kingdom Backwards
Who do you want to have become when your life is finished?
The Thesis
Instead of allowing appetite and circumstance to determine the future, begin with the desired end and sacrifice backward toward it. The future is built by what you sacrifice today.
Begin at the End
Most lives are built forward—by appetite reacting to circumstance. A kingdom is built backward: by a vision of the finished person, working in reverse to the present choice.
Name the person you wish to become. That name is the architecture of every decision beneath it.
Sacrifice Backward
From vision comes character; from character, habits; from habits, daily sacrifice; from daily sacrifice, the present choice.
Each layer is paid for by the one below it. You cannot have the character without the habits, or the habits without the daily cost.
The Future Is Built Today
The future is not something that happens to you. It is something being built—right now—by what you sacrifice or refuse to sacrifice.
Refusal is also a sacrifice. It sacrifices the future to keep the present comfortable.
The Shape of the Idea
“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.”
Name the person you wish to become, then ask: what daily sacrifice is that person worth? Pay it today. The future is being built by what you do now.
A civilization is built by people who paid for a future they would not live to see. When no one is willing to pay, the future is simply spent.
